Backseat Driver.

One of my biggest pet peeves is a backseat driver.

"Go left."
"Slow down."
"Speed up."
"Get in the other lane."
"Why are you going that way?"
"Why don't you go that way?"

I had a "backseat driver" experience the other day.  I was SO SO annoyed. So annoyed that I thought about it later that evening. The more I thought about it, the more I started to question myself. "Do I do the same thing to others?" I'm sure I have at some point, but I REALLY try not to.

As I prayed later that evening, I found that my prayer was something like this...

"God, I want to go left."
"God, I want _____ to slow down."
"God, I want _____ to happen faster."
"God, I want to be on that road."
"God, why are You taking me this way?"
"God, why can't I go that way?"

I was shocked. I may or may not be a backseat driver in a car, but I sure am a backseat driver when it comes to God.  So often I spend so much of my time telling Him where "I" want to go and how "I" want to get there. I spend so much time focusing on what it is that "I" want.  I forget that His plan for me is perfect despite what I can't see.

He has a perfect driving record...
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin." Hebrews 4:15

He knows the best route. His way is perfect...
"As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him." 2 Samuel 22:31

He's been down this road before. He understands my frustrations...
"Because Jesus experienced temptation when he suffered, he is able to help others when they are tempted." Hebrews 2:18

He knows the plan. My job is to trust Him.
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6

I need to stop trying to control my world and trust God to do the job... Besides, I am a terrible driver anyway ;).

Happy Tuesday =)

Hi Jenn,
What a great post! We do need to quit being so self-sufficient and commit to wholehearted obedience to the things of God. We need to immerse ourselves in it and apply it to our lives, because the only way to find peace and rest for our souls is to walk on God’s path and do it His way! :)

Blessings and hugs, :)
